Volcano Making

What will happen when we mix baking soda and vinegar?
A volcano!
We worked in buddies to make a volcano out of lego. We added one teaspoon of baking soda into the canister and then poured 1/4 cup of vinegar in. Wow, what a chemical reaction. Bubbles slowly rising up and over the top to pour over the sides. That was the carbon dioxide that was formed when they mixed together. Not only did we do the experiment but we took photos on a app called Stop Motion. Next week we will be turning our experiment into a movie for others to watch.

Fizz and Zing

Acids and carbonates! What happens when we mix them together? We tried different acids and carbonates to see if they had chemical reaction. Some did and some didn't. We discussed what happened to the ones that did. The acid dissolved the carbonate and it formed a gas called carbon dioxide. This was shown by the bubbles that formed in the mixture.

Tomato juice and baking soda

Orange juice and baking powder

Vinegar and egg shells

City College

City College came to talk to some of our senior classes today. Some senior and junior students spoke to us about what subjects they do at school and all the other activities you can get involved in at City College. We recognised a few of the students because they use to come to Carlton School.

Chunky Chalk

We love being scientists! Today we watched the chemical reaction between Plaster of Paris, dye and water! After an hour we made an observation. It felt hard and warm. The water and gypsum in the Plaster of Paris started to recombine which became warm and hard. We can't wait to take our chunky chalk out of the bag and use it.

Kapa Haka

We are really enjoying our Kapa Haka sessions with Whaea Christine. We have been learning a new song. Next week we are going to start learning the actions.

Kahurangi Dance Company

Last week we were privileged to have six members of the Kahurangi Dance Company perform for us. They had amazing voices that were very loud. They shared stories, dances and songs with us. Mase and Jaxon were lucky enough to go on stage and try using a taiaha. They had to copy what one of the men did. Mase and Jaxon found that very challenging. We will now persist to sing loud and proud during our own Kapa Haka sessions just like them.

Holiday Postcards

We loved creating our own postcards. After pulling a classmates name out of the bag we wrote about what we did over the holidays. We designed the front to match what we wrote about. We addressed them and can't want to receive our postcards in our mailboxes at home.
